General Dentistry FAQs

At Kimberly Rice Dental in Ypsilanti, MI, we’re committed to providing gentle, informed care that supports long-term oral health for every member of the family. It’s easy to have many questions about your dental care. We’ve provided clear answers to common questions about general dentistry, so you can feel confident in your daily habits and remain comfortable during your visits.

What causes sensitive teeth?

Sensitive teeth often occur when the protective enamel on your teeth wears down or your gums recede, exposing the underlying dentin. When that happens, external triggers like hot or cold foods, sweet or acidic treats, or even cold air can cause a sudden jolt of discomfort. Additionally, habits such as aggressive brushing, grinding or clenching your teeth, or using a hard-bristled toothbrush may play a role.

What Dental Services Do You Provide?

At Kimberly Rice Dental, we provide a full range of services, including preventive care, restorative dental treatments, cosmetic dentistry, and family dental care. From cleanings and fillings to crowns, implants, and smile design, our goal is to keep your teeth healthy and your smile beautiful at every stage of life.

Can a general dentist treat children?

Yes — absolutely. At Kimberly Rice Dental, we provide family-friendly care tailored for children, teens, adults, and seniors alike. Our team takes pride in helping younger patients feel safe and relaxed, and we’re equipped to offer a wide range of treatments for children, alongside our adult services.

Will I get cavities without general dentistry check-ups?

Regular check-ups and cleanings help us identify early signs of tooth decay, gum issues, or other oral health concerns before they become more significant problems. Without that ongoing oversight, plaque and tartar build-up may lead to cavities, gum disease, or more invasive treatment down the road.

What's the best time to brush?

The best practice is to brush your teeth twice a day: once in the morning and once before bedtime. Brushing before bed is especially important because it removes the day’s buildup and prevents bacteria from working while you sleep. If you’re eating or drinking something acidic, wait about 30 minutes before brushing to avoid enamel wear.

Can tooth decay be reversed?

In some cases, yes. Early-stage decay can be halted or even reversed through good oral hygiene, fluoride treatments, and eliminating dietary sugars or acids that feed decay. But once the decay has formed a cavity that needs a filling, it’s no longer reversible on its own.

Do I need to fix my chipped tooth?

Even small chips can leave the inner tooth structure vulnerable to decay, sensitivity, or further damage. While not every chip demands urgent intervention, it’s wise to schedule a visit sooner rather than later for an evaluation.

Do You Offer Cosmetic Dentistry?

Yes — Kimberly Rice Dental offers comprehensive cosmetic dentistry, including teeth whitening, veneers, bonding, and custom smile design, to create natural, confident smiles that complement your overall appearance.
